What happens in a Pilates mat class?

Mats, cushions, balls and other supports are all provided in a mat class. You should wear comfortable, close-fitting clothing and we work without shoes.

Classes are small so we can offer feedback to help you find and maintain proper form and alignment to gain most benefit from your time with us.

Most exercises are performed lying on the floor, either on your back, side or front. Talk to us if lying is painful to discuss other options.

You are encouraged to internalize your thoughts, connecting with your body sensations. Movements are slow and controlled. You work at the natural rhythm of your breath.

You should feel relaxed and energized after a class.

How long before I notice a difference?

Joseph Pilates is quoted as saying:

“ after 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, after 20 you’ll see the difference and after 30 others will see the difference ”

At Chewing Gum PIlates we don’t try to ‘fix’ any one particular thing or to attain a particular body shape, although both of these result from regular practice.

Our aim is to help you to improve the way you feel about and use your body so you continue to make improvements for life.

Is Pilates suitable for me?

The underlying principles of the Pilates method are applicable to everyone, regardless of age, sex, fitness level, body type or physical limitation.

It is practiced worldwide by people of all ages, and across the whole spectrum of peoples' mobility, from those who have difficulty moving through to professionals such as athletes and dancers.

Pilates helps those who find movement painful to regain control of their bodies, working from the inside out to re-establish the stabilising role of the deeper muscles.

Pilates help athletes ’fine tune‘ movement patterns and create a strong and stable core, supporting the body throughout demanding movements.

Pilates helps women both through pregnancy and postnatally. You regain your body and better prepare yourself for the physical demands of motherhood.

The Pilates method promotes ease. It can safely be practiced throughout life and is an integral part of a healthy older age.
