The Pilates method, as its founder Joe Pilates predicted back in the 1930s, has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Studios and classes can now be found in almost every country in the world.

People of all ages and all body shapes have benefited greatly from its practice. They have found it to be more than just exercise.

It enhances our awareness and reconnects us to our bodies, changing how we move, and how we view ourselves.

So whether you are super-fit, semi-fit or about-to-be-fit, Pilates has much to offer.

Why ‘Chewing Gum’?

Many people have asked me about the unusual name. Why did I call it Chewing Gum Pilates.

Like all good eureka moments, the name just came to me one afternoon whilst I was teaching.

For weeks I had been brainstorming name ideas and hadn't found anything which really fit.

During class this particular afternoon, I asked the class to imagine that their joints were made of chewing gum to help them feel a sense of malleability and flexibility in their joints.

Imagine chewing gum being stretched.

In that moment I had the name and I still like it.

How do I get started?

If you are a newcomer to Pilates you might like to read a bit more about it and its founder Joseph H Pilates .

One of the main questions I'm asked is 'Is Pilates suitable for me?'. Pilates, if taught considerately, is suitable for almost everyone.

Here at Chewing Gum Pilates we teach the very young (9 upwards) to the very old, those in-shape to those out-of-shape, those with painful joints and those with physical limitations.

If you do want to give the Pilates method a try, or if you have had previous experience, then you might like to know a little more about our philosophy and approach here at Chewing Gum Pilates and what we have to offer.

Pilates teachers vary greatly in the amount of training and experience they have and the approach they take when teaching. Good teachers will find the ideal path between your expectations and your needs. They will encourage you and challenge you but will always keep you safe.

Studio closure

Regretfully the Thames studio will close on Saturday 16th August. We are moving to Sydney.

I will miss you all but take with me all the fun moments we have shared.

A new teacher will be taking over in October.

Pilates for life

Our philosophy here at Chewing Gum Pilates is that Pilates is for life.

We feel that we should exercise our minds and bodies to ensure we are prepared and fit for the demands of everyday life.

Being fit for life is not something we do once in a while. Being fit for life is for the whole of our life.

Hopefully, like us, practicing Pilates will become an integral part of your life for the rest of your life. And we wish you a long, healthy and happy one.
